Marrickville

Harnett Avenue

Main Period: Victorian - Federation - Interwar

Leadlight apparent at No’s 44& 47

Lots in Harnett Avenue were initially auctioned in 1882 but it appears that the lots on the southern side of the street were more popular. Most of the northern side of the street remained unsold through till 1885 when they were offered again. Most of the houses in the street appear to be from the late Victorian and Early Federation years. As a result there is a great variety in housing in Harnett Avenue but not a lot of leadlight.

There are lots of small Federation homes and semi-detached dwellings in the street.

Harnett Avenue

No 44 is a hip roofed Californian bungalow (c.1926) with leadlight in a three panel casement window. The design is interesting because the centre panel is larger than the outer two.  The design in the leadlight uses bevelled glass diamonds, the centre surrounded by a subtle border of blue glass. Very elegant.
