Summer Hill

Herbert Street

Main Period: Victorian - Federation - Interwar

1886 Centennial Estate - Summer Hill - J
1886 Summer Hill - Centennial Estate - H
1880 Prospect Hall - Summer Hill Estate

Leadlight apparent at No’s 6, 27, 31, 33 & 39.

The first two subdivisions took place in 1886 and while Herbert Street is shown none of the lots actually fronted Herbert. The Prospect Hall Estate also shows Herbert Street but again none of the lots faced Herbert Street. The 1886 maps are interesting because they show some of the significant estates that existed in 1886.

Herbert Street is a lovely tree lined street. The eastern end of Herbert Street is quite old with a few Victorian and  Federation  houses with narrow frontages is a narrow front yards. The southern side of Herbert Street is part of the 'Prospect Hall Summer Hill Heritage Conservation Area'.  The street 'has aesthetic significance deriving from the 1908 subdivision pattern with little re-subdivision since, and the original building covenants applying to the subdivision, resulting in an aesthetically consistent subdivision of wide streets with grass verges'  Draft Comprehensive Inner West DCP 2016, P.337.

Not only have the houses been largely preserved but so has their beautiful Federation and Interwar leadlight.

Herbert Street

No 6 is a modified house Interwar Bungalow (c.1940) with leadlight in what would have originally been double doors with sidelights but are now windows. There is also leadlight in the front door panels that suggests it may have been reused from another house.
