DULWICH HILL

Pile Street

Main Period: Victorian - Federation - Interwar

Leadlight apparent at No's 11, 12, 13, 18, 26, 28, 30, 32, 36, 38 & 50.

All of Pile Street was offered for auction as part of Wardell Hill Marrickville in 1884. Most of the lots were relatively small. There are a lot of small/modest Victorian houses/cottages and a two storey terrace together with some early Federation cottages and small Californian bungalows. The leadlight that still exists enables an observer to view styles in leadlight from the mid 1880's to the late 1920's. The name of the street may be from one of the real estate agents 'Mills, Pile and Gilcrest'... see the poster to the right.

Pile Street

No 1 is a Mid-Federation house (c.1912) with leadlight in a three panel casement window on the veranda another three panel casement window on the left. There is also leadlight in the fanlight and possibly in the front door panels but it was open at the time. The design in the windows is very 'ovalate' and fluid displaying the influence of Art Nouveu.
