Ambleside Inside

Inside Ambleside; Ashfield Castle

On Sunday 19th August members of the Ashfield & District Historical Society were invited by the owners of Ambleside, Maria and Louis Armenis to view the inside of this beautiful place. Maria and Louis have done an exceptional job of restoring this unique house.  I was fortunate to be a member of the group that toured the house and took some photographs of the magnificent leadlight and stained glass visible from inside the house.

This house was originally owned by Sir Hugh Dix in the early 1887 and can be described as a Gothic Mansion.

There are several examples of stained glass inside the house, the most spectacular being in the music or drawing room where there is a large bay window. In the lower windows there is stained glass portraying the composers Gounod, Weber, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Haydn. The upper windows depict female figures representing the fruits of civilization.
