ASHFIELD

Chandos  Street

Main Period: Late Victorian – Federation – late Federation

Leadlight apparent at No’s 23, 29, 33, 48, 50, 74, 88 & 90

Initially subdivided in 1879 it is clear that there have been many different types of buildings built in the street over many years. The Chandos Nursing Home is a significant Queen Anne Style building in Chandos Street. Built in 1889 it is an early Federation house having a spectacular round ‘tower’ with a domed roof. The leadlight is a beautiful example of late Victorian early Federation work and it is in excellent condition. Numerous flats and units have been built closer to the station so a lot of the original homes have been demolished.

Chandos Street

The fanlight at No 23 (built 1890) is an excellent example of Victorian leadlight with a central circle of stained glass and though it is slightly damaged is representative of the period.

While this house is mentioned in the The Ashfield Heritage Study 1991-1992 there is no reference to the leadlight in the fanlight.
