Petersham Road runs north-south from Illawarra Road to Sydenham Road. As the market gardens of Marrickville began to be subdivided Petersham Road changed from rural to Residential. The Graham’s Garden subdivision of 1886, from Marrickville Road to Garden Street was one of the early subdivisions. Lots 1-9 and 19 are now the site of Marrickville Town Hall and library. The Council must have purchased this land well before the second Graham’s Estate subdivision in 1914 because the site is marked on the plan. By 1914 Garden Street had been changed to Stanley Street. The northwestern end of Petersham Road was subdivided in the Brereton’s Estate. The original Public School is shown on Sydenham Road as is the Australian Woollen Mills which was a significant employer in Marrickville, particularly of women.
Obviously, a few subdivisions occurred in the 1920’s.
The remaining leadlight in Petersham road provides some excellent examples of how the leadlight changed from the 1880’s through to the 1930’s and it is well worth the stroll.
