DULWICH HILL

Hampstead Road

Main Period: Victorian- Federation

Leadlight apparent at No’s 4, 5, 7, 8, 14, 17, 18, 20 & 22.

The first subdivisions of Hamstead Road appear to have started with the Hainstead Hill Estate in 1884 and with the Fairmount Estate around the same time. Almost all of the dwellings are from the late Victorian to mid-Federation years with just a couple of Interwar Californian bungalows at the southern end of the street and some are very much intact. There are some excellent examples of late Victorian and early Federation leadlight and almost all of it is in the front entrances.

No 4 is a modified early Federation house with leadlight in the front door panels and in the sidelights. It is almost certainly not original but it’s a very sympathetic addition. There is possibly leadlight in a bull’s eye but it was not able to be photographed.
